The Institute's twelve Houses, named for Roman gods, that sort and network the young Golds toward powerful patrons.
The Houses are the twelve SchoolHouses of the Institute, each named for a god of the Roman pantheon and loosely built around underlying personality traits. As Julian explains, they are networking tools and social clubs that endure beyond the school: excel within one and it will find you a powerful Gold family to serve, for the Great Families — not one's fellow planet-dwellers — are the true powers of the Society, holding their own armies and fleets and commanding real loyalty. Each House is led by a Primus, its foremost member; Julian's brother is expected to take that place.
For Darrow, mastering a House is the path to the patronage the Cause needs.
