The Institute

The Golds' brutal proving ground whose survivors rank as Peerless Scarred, Graduates, or Shamed — an audition for patronage.

Story so far

Admission to the Institute is gated by tests even the Sons-of-Ares cannot forge — mental extrapolation trials and punishing physical measurement by the Quality Control Board. Matteo explains what waits within: three sorts graduate. The Peerless Scarred may ascend freely; the Graduates rise with limited prospects and must still earn their scars; and the Shamed are exiled to hard, distant colonies like Pluto to oversee first-stage terraforming.

Rank is decided by some ranking system or competition, likely built, like the Golds themselves, on conquest. Above all it is an extended audition for patronage — a powerful benefactor's apprenticeship — the true engine of Gold advancement. A Praetor's apprentice might in ten years command a fleet, which is exactly why Darrow must excel there for the Cause.

Appearance

Undescribed directly so far; known as the Golds' deadly proving ground, entered only after grueling admissions tests.
