Mrs Philips

Mrs. Philips · the Bennet girls' aunt

A hospitable Meryton aunt whose noisy card party gives Wickham the setting to charm Elizabeth and Collins the setting to inflate himself.

Story so far

Mrs. Philips welcomes the five Bennet sisters and Mr. Collins to an evening party in Meryton, delighted enough by Collins's description of Rosings Park to hear his comparison of her room with Lady Catherine's household as a compliment. She supplies him with coffee and muffins and finds his willingness to play whist obliging, while he treats five shillings lost at cards as proof of his prosperity.

Her gathering brings the local officers together with the Bennet family. It is there that Mr. Wickham chooses a place beside Elizabeth Bennet, tells her his history with Darcy, and captivates the room through the supper-party bustle.

Appearance

She is Mrs. Bennet's Meryton sister and an attorney's wife. Her age, face, hair, complexion, figure, and clothing are not described.

Role

She provides the busy local drawing room in which Wickham enters the Bennets' intimate social orbit.
