Boiling Space Anomaly

Boiling space · Quantum anomaly · Vacuum-state anomaly · Hot places in space

Patches near the Sol gate show runaway quantum creation and annihilation in normal space after Laconia's transit or attack, for reasons no one understands.

Story so far

Sensor arrays concentrated on the Sol ring detect interference resembling signals distorted by gate transit, except it is localized in several regions of ordinary space rather than at the ring itself. In those patches, the vacuum state's spontaneous creation and annihilation of subatomic particles occurs at an enormously elevated rate. More regions may exist beyond the incomplete survey.

Logs suggest the anomaly appeared around the time the Heart of the Tempest passed through the gate or fired on the central hub, but timing is not precise enough to distinguish the cause. Union science advisor Cameron Tur rejects a stealth-ship explanation and describes the behavior as space itself boiling. Its scale, purpose, and danger remain entirely unknown.

Appearance

Invisible patches of apparently empty space revealed on sensor schematics by extreme quantum fluctuation and signal interference outside the ring itself.

Role

The anomaly is an unprecedented physical consequence or companion to Laconia's arrival, introducing danger beyond the empire's directly understood weapons.

Relationships

Cameron Tur — Cameron Tur identifies and explains the abnormal vacuum-state activity.
Heart of the Tempest — The Heart of the Tempest transited and fired near the time the anomaly appears, though causation is not established.
Laconia Gate — The Laconia Gate lies near the known anomalous patches and was the focus of the sensors that found them.
