A university disguises covert anti-corporate rescue work as research, manufacturing legal protection for colonies abandoned to predatory reclamation.
The Pansystem University of Mihira and New Tideland owns or administers ART, officially operating Perihelion as a teaching vessel, deep-space mapping platform, research transport, and occasional cargo hauler. Beneath those legitimate functions, it supports anti-corporate organizations acting for the polity of Mihira and New Tideland.
When corporate database reconstruction reveals the coordinates of the Lost Colony, the university sends ART's crew to arrive before salvage companies. Their mission is to determine whether inhabitants survived, make contact, and prevent exploitation by evacuation or direct assistance. If the colony remains viable, the university can produce a charter ceding the planet to the residents, then facilitate a contract with an independent transfer station whose presence protects the claim. Murderbot correctly infers that “produce” may mean forging documents that should have existed.
The mission's secrecy is protected by crew confidentiality agreements. ART refuses to reveal it until the crisis warrants disclosure and threatens the corporate survivor Eletra if the Preservation team passes the information onward.
The university is represented by Perihelion's teaching and research spaces, the transport's missing crew, covert intelligence files, colony charters, and political support from Mihira and New Tideland.
Pansystem University is the institutional force behind ART's anti-corporate mission. Its resources offer endangered colonies a legal path to autonomy that Corporation Rim otherwise denies them.
