Ras

Casualty Two · Barish-Estranza employee

A frightened recovery worker dies under remote control, his apparent betrayal revealed as the final seizure of a body already made captive.

Story so far

Ras is a Barish-Estranza recovery employee captured with Eletra after ART attacks their supply transport en route to a rediscovered colony. He provides water and expedition history inside Medical but distrusts Murderbot, repeats corporate propaganda about rogue SecUnits, and believes he has spent days aboard despite Amena arriving only recently.

Ras fires a captured energy weapon at Murderbot without warning. Amena tackles him, but his disordered speech suggests panic and external confusion rather than a planned betrayal. Moments later he collapses as a crude implant hidden beneath the skin of his shoulder blade activates. The device sends destructive energy through his chest, stopping circulation and respiration before Murderbot can jam the control signal.

Murderbot places Ras's body on a gurney and covers it, then examines the swollen tissue surrounding the dead implant. The damage suggests Ras may once have known it was there and tried desperately to remove it before the intruders made him forget. His death transforms the captors' vague control into a governor-module horror Murderbot understands intimately.

Appearance

In life, Ras was an adult man of unspecified features, skin tone, hair, and build, bruised and limping in a torn red-and-brown Barish-Estranza uniform. A badly infected implant wound lay over one shoulder blade.

Role

Ras is a casualty of the gray intruders' coercive implants. His death reveals that the captors can distort behavior and kill remotely, while complicating every judgment about trust and responsibility.

Relationships

Eletra — Eletra is Ras's colleague and fellow implant victim; the same activation nearly kills her moments after his death.
Murderbot — Ras shoots Murderbot while confused, but the SecUnit recognizes his implant as a form of coercion akin to its own former governor module.
Amena — Amena tackles Ras to protect Murderbot and later must tell Eletra that he has died.
Gray Intruders — The Gray Intruders secretly implant Ras, suppress his awareness of the device, and remotely kill him when he escapes.
Barish-Estranza — Ras dies far from his Barish-Estranza recovery expedition, with its lost-colony mission still unresolved.
