Once a Red miner remade into a Gold to bring down the Society from within, Darrow conquered the Institute, sparked a civil war on Mars, and won and then lost everything when his enemies exposed him as a Red at his victory Triumph. Now the Jackal—Adrius au Augustus, the son who murdered his own father—holds him captive. After the death of Lorn, Darrow was to be handed to Sovereign Octavia for dissection, but the Jackal struck a bargain to keep him instead, torturing him at his Attica estate to learn the secrets of the Sons of Ares and, worse, breaking him into confessing that his family lived in Lykos. For months since, Darrow has been sealed in a cramped stone tomb, cuffed and naked, fed through tubes, unable even to stretch. The isolation gnaws his sanity; a taunting inner voice—the darkness—alternately urges him to save himself and to surrender. The Jackal has offered him luxury and freedom in exchange for just three words, "I am broken"—but the price is his family, whom the Jackal has seized from Lykos and imprisoned in the bowels of Attica, threatening to feed them to his other captives to prove that man is an animal and Gold must rule. Tormented by memories of Eo, of Mustang who fled when he showed his true face, and of all the friends his deceptions destroyed, Darrow refuses to say the words. Convinced there is no Vale, no afterlife, and that only death offers an honorable escape before he betrays more of himself, he begins slamming his head against the stone, trying to kill himself. But as he draws back for a final blow, the stone above him groans and cracks, and a blazing sword of light slashes down into the darkness.
