Ade Tukunbo serves as navigator on the Canterbury and keeps an affectionate but explicitly casual relationship with James Holden. When the stealth ship attacks, she calmly works with Captain McDowell to attempt an emergency burn and keeps an open channel to Holden as he races back from the Scopuli.
The Canterbury's drive fails to save the ship. Ade's voice counts down the torpedo impact; her final sharp breath is all Holden hears before the communication breaks apart.
Ade is a long-limbed woman with a thick Nigerian accent and a warm smile. She wears thick headphones at navigation and scents her hair with patchouli and vanilla.
Ade is Holden's lost lover and one of the named dead whose destruction he cannot accept as anonymous.
