Protogen

The corporate power behind the Anubis, Thoth, and Eros, revealed to alter its own scientists into sociopaths so it can learn to reprogram alien technology and humanity itself.

Story so far

Protogen's former Eros security contract, hidden station infrastructure, stealth vessel Anubis, and laboratory at Thoth Station now form a single exposed operation. Its public-facing executive, Dresden, confirms that the company recovered the infected material required for Eros after the Anubis was lost and watched the mass experiment through Thoth's data links. The organization's goal is not merely a biological weapon or private profit, though it seeks power as well: it wants to understand the Protomolecule's instructions and learn to rewrite them.

Dresden explains that Protogen deliberately removed ethical restraints from the scientists and technicians who had to design and run Eros. The resulting highly curious sociopaths remained content when given difficult problems and unlimited resources; riot-control security existed for occasional instability. The admission makes the internal layout of Thoth newly legible: research personnel were valuable but controlled, and ordinary institutional conscience was treated as an obstacle to be engineered away. Protogen presents itself as humanity's necessary defense against an ancient alien civilization, but its method already treats millions of humans as disposable material for a proprietary evolutionary project.

Appearance

Protogen appears through sleek black stealth warships, polished corporate presentations, high-security research stations, controlled technical staff, sophisticated surveillance and communications systems, and security forces equipped for both war and riot suppression.

Role

Protogen is the organization turning alien technology and altered human conscience into a bid for species-level power, with Eros as its deliberate proof of concept.

Relationships

Dresden — Dresden is Protogen's executive bio-research architect and the public voice of its argument for Eros.
Anubis — The Anubis was Protogen's stealth vessel carrying the infectious material whose loss briefly delayed the Eros timetable.
Thoth Station — Thoth Station is Protogen's hidden research and observation hub, now seized by the OPA.
Eros — Eros is Protogen's mass-scale protomolecule experiment, designed and monitored by a staff whose ethical restraints were removed.
