Ascomanni

The Ascomanni · Ash Men

Deepspace Obsidian raiders descended from those who fled the Society's culling; cannibal pirates of the dark.

Story so far

The Ascomanni—'Ash Men'—are Obsidian tribes who escaped the Society's culling of their race after the Dark Revolt centuries ago, fleeing into deep space and haunting the far colonies of Neptune and Pluto as legend. Now, swelled by the Obsidian diaspora from the poles of Earth and Mars and disillusionment with Darrow's war, the myth has become real: braid-haired, scar-skinned savages in scrap armor who speak nagal, strap corpses to their hulls, eat their captives, and take slaves for their jarls. In the Gulf, a hunting party of them massacres the crew of the Vindabona and cages the survivors, while Cassius and Lysander slip aboard to rescue them—three Ascomanni warships closing to haul away the prize.

Role

A savage deepspace pirate threat; the Ice brought to the stars, menacing the Belt's edges.

Relationships

Lysander — The heir who has killed their kind before and now stalks them alone aboard the Vindabona.
Cassius — The knight whose distress-call rescue pits him against their hunting party.
Sefi — Queen of the Obsidian Horde, from whose ordered people these outcasts stand wholly apart.
