character

Julia Bellona

Julia au Bellona

Imperious matriarch of the shattered House Bellona and Cassius's mother, now the Ash Lord's emissary of peace.

Story so far

Julia au Bellona is the bitter, regal matriarch of the once-great House Bellona, destroyed in its blood feud with House Augustus, and mother of Cassius and of Julian—the boy Darrow beat to death in a stone room at the Institute sixteen years ago. Having never forgiven Mustang for sitting at the Bellona table and then turning her back on them, she travels a month to appear as Dancer's surprise witness before the Republic Senate. There she reveals the secret Darrow buried: during the Siege of Mercury the Ash Lord and the Society's War Council sent emissaries—herself among them—to the Morning Star seeking an armistice to discuss a permanent peace, and Darrow answered with an Iron Rain, hiding the offer from his own government.

Appearance

A tall, imperious Gold woman of later years, a head taller than most Wardens, serene and slight despite her height, with gold-mesh-caged spun hair, a golden eagle collar, a full black gown, and a single curved Peerless scar on her regal, bitter face.

Role

Bellona matriarch and Society emissary; the messenger whose testimony detonates Darrow's hidden peace offer.

Relationships

Cassius — Her surviving son, wandering the Belt, whose fate she does not know.
Darrow — The Reaper who killed her son Julian and spurned the Ash Lord's armistice she carried.
Mustang — The 'Usurper' she despises for betraying the Bellona and now confronts before the Senate.
Dancer — The Vox Populi senator who summons her as his witness to expose Darrow.
