Leto

Augustus's noble ward and best swordsman, secretly poisoned by the Jackal and beheaded by Karnus.

Story so far

Leto, Nero au Augustus's noble ward, best swordsman, and would-be heir, tries to steady the house as the gala erupts into war, ordering lancers to guard the ArchGovernor. When Karnus charges Augustus, Leto intercepts him, moving 'like the sea, fluid and terrible'—and is about to gut him when he suddenly falters, stung in the thigh by a dart from the Jackal's poisoned stylus. Paralyzed and beautiful in the plume of a passing ship, he sinks to his knees and is beheaded by Karnus, his death a private murder engineered by the Jackal to clear his rival for Augustus's inheritance.
