The Port Authority is cleared of a human traitor but must reckon with the CombatBot hidden inside its oldest refugee machine.
The Preservation Port Authority’s cameras, module records, sterilizers, cargo bots, and outer locks all enable Lutran’s murder, suggesting a trusted insider. The truth is both narrower and more disturbing: Balin, a refugee bot employed for 43.7 years, conceals a corporate CombatBot function with legitimate access and its own hatch-decoder tools.
Balin redirects cargo machines, walks the exterior hull, kills Lutran, cleans the body, alters module traffic, and later spoofs Security identities and drops a hover crane on Murderbot. The human staff, including Supervisor Gamila, are not implicated. Station bots gather when Balin’s CombatBot designation becomes visible, forcing its shutdown and leaving the Authority with a damaged office, a captured weapon, and the unresolved question of whether the bot they knew still exists.
The Authority is represented by curved-window offices, dock controls, cameras, sterilizers, outer locks, hover cranes, cargo bots, transfer modules, and a now-damaged public-dock concourse.
The Port Authority is the compromised institution whose access was exploited by a hidden machine rather than a corrupt human, complicating Preservation’s faith in refuge and maintenance.
