Walker’s modified portable radio supports inter-silo communication; its design includes numbered channels and numerous added knobs and dials.
Walker began building the portable radio for communication between silos. Its early form was slightly larger than a deputy's hip radio, used a large external battery and had a dial with thirty-two numbered positions. Walker said repeaters in both silos would support channel switching, while rechargeable power and voltage regulation still needed work.
The unusual radio acquired numerous knobs and dials. Courtnee gave it to Jimmy at Juliette's request. Later, Juliette inferred that her father was using Walker's new portable radio because his call arrived on channel 17. Lukas took a portable radio from its charging rack to contact her. Walker has continued modifying the portable unit with numerous controls.
