The main diesel generator now runs smoothly after Juliette’s refit corrected its dangerous imbalance.
The generator’s rapidly spinning shaft links two huge machines. Juliette traced its vibration to a coupling barely two millimeters out of alignment and warned that transmission shavings could circulate through the oil, but the uninterrupted-power mandate prevented her proposed repair. Her eventual refit added new gaskets and seals, polished cylinder shafts, and corrected the alignment. This was its first complete shutdown in her lifetime.
A smaller electrical engine restarted the large diesel generator. Once running, the rebuilt machine was quieter than its starter and no longer shook a nearby railing. During the fighting, full fuel tanks offered a few weeks of power, and a second-shift crew tried to divert its noxious exhaust toward the floors in the thirties. The main generator continues to run more smoothly than it did before the severe imbalance was corrected.
The large diesel generator connects to its dynamo through a steel shaft about as thick as a man’s waist. Its refurbished assembly runs without the former severe vibration.
It is the main generator, operating with its former severe imbalance corrected.
