Generator

The repaired diesel generator powers the silo; a second-shift crew is trying to redirect its noxious exhaust toward the floors in the thirties.

Story so far

The generator’s huge machines were joined by a rapidly spinning shaft, but Juliette traced its vibration to a coupling barely two millimeters out of alignment. The full-power mandate had prevented the repair she wanted, even as she warned that transmission shavings could circulate through the oil.

Its refit included new gaskets and seals, polished cylinder shafts, and an aligned shaft. It was the first complete shutdown in Juliette’s lifetime. After the smaller electric starter brought it online, the rebuilt generator ran so quietly that it was quieter than the starter and no longer shook a nearby railing.

Both fuel tanks were subsequently reported full, providing a few weeks of power. A second-shift crew is now trying to reroute the main generator’s noxious exhaust to the floors in the thirties.

Appearance

A large diesel generator connected to its dynamo by a steel shaft approximately as thick as a man’s waist. A smaller electrical engine starts it.

Role

The silo’s repaired main power generator, whose exhaust is now the subject of a wartime rerouting attempt.

Relationships

Juliette — Juliette identified the shaft misalignment and repaired the generator before leaving Mechanical.
