Helen

Karma Brewer

Helen was Donald’s wife before their separation; she lived in Silo Two as Karma Brewer and died at eighty-two.

Story so far

Helen lived in Savannah while Donald worked in Washington. She considered him a good husband but distrusted the people around him, worried that the Senator was exploiting his work, and remained uneasy about his contact with Anna Thurman, who had once dated him. She had opposed his political career out of concern for him, yet reassured him of her love when his account of the threat left him distressed. They postponed children while pursuing their careers, and their later conversations became superficial.

Helen was expected at the convention at the Senator’s insistence. Her message placed her at Tennessee while Donald searched for her. He later remembered her disappearing over a hill beneath the falling bombs. Records eventually showed that she had lived in Silo Two as Karma Brewer, becoming a teacher, school master, and judge—the profession she had dreamed of. She died at eighty-two; the record listed Rick Brewer and children Athena and Mars as survivors.

Donald came to acknowledge the life Helen shared with Mick and remembered their children and grandchildren. Her grave lay beneath the concrete tower in the bowl beside his silo. He later said his journey outside had been driven by wanting to see where she lived and died. He now remembers her as having died in the ordinary course of life.
