Carfax

the estate at Purfleet · the Purfleet estate · Quatre Face · the deserted house

The hunters enter Carfax's dust-choked chapel, count only twenty-nine boxes, and survive Dracula's defensive swarm of rats.

Story so far

The Dracula Hunters cross from the asylum into Carfax armed with garlic, crucifix, Host, firearms, knives, and lamps. Jonathan Harker guides them through the mapped house to the foul-smelling ruined chapel where Dracula's imported earth is stored.

Only twenty-nine of fifty Boxes of Earth remain. When a tide of rats pours into the chapel, Arthur Holmwood whistles for terriers that scatter the swarm, proving Dracula can summon animals without placing them beyond ordinary animal defeat.

Appearance

A dust-choked, web-hung medieval house with keys in its hall and a rank ruined chapel containing twenty-nine earth boxes, invaded by a black moving carpet of rats.

Role

Carfax is the hunters' first invaded lair, revealing both the scale of Dracula's distributed refuge network and a limit on his animal servants.
