character

Lucy Westenra

Miss Lucy Westenra · Lucy · the bloofer lady · the beautiful lady · the Un-Dead · the Thing

Arthur witnesses Lucy as a bloodstained predator, then gives the stake-stroke that restores her true face and frees her soul.

Story so far

The Un-Dead Lucy Westenra returns to the tomb carrying a child, dark-haired and white-shrouded, with lips crimson from blood. She throws the child aside and calls Arthur Holmwood to her as husband, nearly enchanting him before Van Helsing's crucifix drives her back.

By daylight Arthur drives a stake through her heart while Van Helsing reads the prayers for the dead. The predatory body screams and writhes, then settles into Lucy's own sweetness and holy calm. Van Helsing and John Seward complete the rite by beheading her and filling the mouth with garlic; Arthur can finally kiss her dead lips without danger.

Appearance

In undeath Lucy is dark-haired, red-lipped, sharp-toothed, voluptuous, and heartlessly beautiful in white grave clothes; released, her face returns to the gentle sweetness of life.

Role

Lucy is released from vampirism through the courage of those who love her, transforming their private grief into a vow against its author.
