Story so far
Newly vast in power, Avasarala takes the one prisoner from the post-Io arrests she'll see personally: Jules-Pierre Mao, caught fleeing to the outer planets and brought to her on Luna. She lets Holden watch (nothing more humiliating for Mao), then coldly dismantles the industrialist. She reminds him she once warned that if he'd hidden things from her she wouldn't take it well — 'this is where you get to find out what that means' — and, refusing any negotiation, tells him plainly she is gloating: she now runs the economic planning council, public health, financial regulation (all inherited from Errinwright, costing her two decades of calendar), and will use that power to drop Mao into a hole so deep his wife forgets him, dismantling everything he built piece by piece and making him watch on 24-hour news.
'I am going to erase you.' Knowing men like Mao live for their legacy, she has found exactly where to hit him — a punishment worse than death. She also fields Holden's polite refusal of a longer contract with wry affection.
