Elise

Holden's Earthbound mother, one of his many parents on the Montana farm — loving, aging, and quietly prejudiced against Belters until she meets Naomi.

Story so far

Mother Elise is one of Holden's parents, living with his father Tom and the rest of his large communal family on their farm in Montana on Earth. Delighted to hear from him on Luna, she begs him to come 'down the well' for a party, but he instead invites the family up to meet Naomi, the Belter woman he now considers more than a girlfriend. Elise's ingrained anti-Belter prejudice flickers through her stiff smiles — worry that Holden's children would be Belters, that he'd leave Earth behind — but her love wins out and she promises to drag Tom onto the shuttle 'by the hair' to meet the woman her son would give up Earth for.

Holden trusts that a few days in Naomi's company will cure the family's bigotry, and quietly asks Elise to safeguard the data he sent her, just in case.

Appearance

An aging Earther woman, her dark near-black hair streaked with gray and laugh lines deepened around eyes and mouth; warm, expressive, prone to stiff covering smiles.

Role

Holden's Earthbound mother, whose prejudice against Belters is softened by love for her son.

Relationships

Holden — Her son 'Jimmy,' whom she loves and worries over, invited up to Luna to meet his partner.
