The book so far

For generations humanity has been split three ways—Earth, Mars, and the resource-starved Belt—and the discovery of the protomolecule and the alien Ring gates has only deepened those fault lines. In the books before this one, the charismatic Belter militant Marco Inaros welded the angriest factions of the Outer Planets into a "Free Navy," then executed the unthinkable: stealth-coated asteroids flung down the gravity well to smash into Earth. Billions died. The war scattered the crew of the gunship Rocinante—Captain Jim Holden, engineer Naomi Nagata (once Marco's lover, and mother to his son Filip), mechanic Amos Burton, and pilot Alex Kamal—and left the Belt's old order, and Fred Johnson's OPA, in fragments.

Where things stand

Recently, the story opens on the wound itself. In Greater Abuja, three months after the rocks fell, a woman named Namono walks home through an ash-choked city where the sun barely penetrates the sky and children can no longer play on the poisoned hills. She queues for a thin weekly relief package, absorbs a ration worker's bitter cruelty, and carries the meager supplies back to the small crooked house she shares with her wife—Pastor Anna, a gentle woman of faith whose leg was crushed in the disaster and who reads and rereads Tolstoy while fevered. Their adolescent daughter Nami keeps up a brave, joking front to spare her mothers worry. Anna, still tending her flock and insisting they must keep pulling together now that the crisis has curdled into grinding endurance, quietly relays the day's news: another rock was thrown at Earth. The Navy caught this one. Sent by Namono to check on an elderly neighbor, she and Nami step into the dark and watch shooting stars streak overhead—beautiful once, now only reminders that this can all end and no one can stop it.
