Dr. Volescu is working beside Bharadwaj when the buried hostile attacks in the crater. He survives physically, but freezes in terror after seeing Bharadwaj taken and Murderbot's violent rescue. Automated medical priorities concentrate on Bharadwaj's bleeding, leaving his shock unrecognized.
Murderbot exposes its face, speaks to him with deliberate gentleness, and has him cling to its arm for the climb out. The team later reviews his field-camera record and is struck by how compassionately the SecUnit handled him. Volescu has children and partners at home, a private fact Murderbot learns only by replaying the words it used to keep him moving.
