Ren

Melba's second · official second · the missing technician

Ren returns in Clarissa's disaster dream, and his sealed remains become the imagined moral center of every death around her without stopping her attack.

Story so far

In the nightmare preceding the Slow Zone Catastrophe, Ren holds Clarissa Mao by the wrist while she reaches into a burning school whose trapped occupants she both wants to save and prevent from escaping. The dream carries his patient support into her guilt until Holden and her father merge into the figure that strikes her awake.

His vacuum-rated tool case remains magnetically clamped in the Thomas Prince storage bay despite the catastrophic stop. Clarissa rests a hand on it and imagines all the surrounding blood and terror radiating from the bones inside—every sin she has committed, backward and forward in time, centered on Ren. The realization produces vertigo and a plea for everything to stop, but moments later she steals a dead officer's access card and continues toward another mass killing.

Appearance

In life, Ren was a pale, thin Belter with mild brown eyes, a large head, carrot-orange hair in a wiry ponytail, and a mole at the base of his skull.

Role

Ren is Clarissa's most intimate victim and the guilt that can make her see the moral shape of her crimes without yet changing her choices.

Relationships

Clarissa Mao — He haunts Clarissa Mao as helper, victim, hidden evidence, and the point around which she briefly understands the scale of her wrongdoing.
Thomas Prince — His sealed remains stay secured aboard the shattered Thomas Prince while bodies from the new catastrophe accumulate around them.
Slow Zone Catastrophe — The Slow Zone Catastrophe turns Clarissa's private murder into one death among a ship full of bodies, intensifying rather than resolving his presence.
