The protomolecule is revealed as a comparatively simple builder tool whose nonlocal investigator can simulate Miller but not remotely override the locked station.
Inside Ring Station, the protomolecule's relationship to its makers becomes clearer. Its Miller investigator is a vast nonlocal computation able to stimulate Holden's unique synaptic patterns so precisely that the captain sees, hears, remembers, and converses with a dead detective. Yet this extraordinary feat is primitive beside the civilization that created it. Miller compares himself to a sophisticated hand terminal and the original builders to something far beyond him.
The tool reaches the builders' station expecting a master and finds only lockdown. It can calm security and open doors, but lacks trusted remote authorization for the central records. It therefore relies on Holden's living body to establish local access. The resulting vision confirms that the protomolecule survived because it was an isolated machine, not because any part of the Ring Builders endured. With access gained, Miller believes he can lift lockdown, though the physical completion remains interrupted by Martian arrest.
It manifests as the stable figure of Miller, blue flickers within his eyes, responsive organic station growth, and an unseen nonlocal computation pressing exact patterns into Holden's brain.
The protomolecule is a surviving orphan tool of the builders, powerful by human standards but dependent on Holden and dwarfed by the extinct mind it once served.
