Story so far
Pa survives the loyalist coup badly beaten and returns to command with her face bandaged. She leads the last memorial before evacuation, speaking in glowing terms about Carlos “Bull” de Baca, Samara Rosenberg, and many other dead whose ashes are commended to the void. Commanders across the flotilla follow from their own ships, creating one ceremony from the fractured forces. Ashford remains sedated and imprisoned; Clarissa remains unnamed while transferring under guard.
The memorial marks the still point between fear and greed, as Alex describes it. Pa's Behemoth will not join the general return. Under Fred Johnson's plan, soil, supplies, and agriculture will convert the drum into a permanent slow-zone station serving exploration of the thousand gates. Her reluctant emergency captaincy has therefore become authority over the first human settlement at the interstellar crossroads.
