The Ring-killing laser reaches green diagnostics under Ruiz's coercion, but Clarissa crashes the Behemoth grid before Ashford's finger completes the firing command.
Sam's sabotage delays the weapon for roughly seven hours before her execution. Under threat of the same death, Anamarie Ruiz installs conductive material, replaces a known power cutout, restores the grid, and checks for further faults. She finally reports that diagnostics are green and the laser should fire, while pleading for her life.
Ashford begins entering the firing sequence. Clarissa knocks him away from the command control, reaches an open access panel, and reverses a brownout buffer according to Ren's old maintenance lesson. Holding reset creates a cascade of conflicting safety reports through the Behemoth's nervous system. The ship fails closed. Lights and grid die before the laser discharges.
The weapon therefore never strikes the Ring at this point. Its readiness makes Clarissa's timing decisive: one more completed touch could have melted the Behemoth's firing side, closed the gate home, or provoked Ring Station's stellar defense.
The laser remains an external optical array connected through power boards, safety cutouts, targeting systems, conductive modifications, and bridge firing controls. No beam is emitted before the grid fails.
The communications laser is the unfired doomsday weapon whose nearly complete circuit is defeated by a single deliberately corrupted safety component.
