The neighboring silo’s staircase links its surviving levels above foul floodwater; green emergency lights still illuminate the route.
The stairwell had working green emergency lights and an upward current of cold air when Juliette explored the other silo. Its lower reaches were flooded beneath a film of oil and gas, with lights still glowing underwater. Two weeks of pumping lowered the flood by less than a foot.
Solo secured a rope to the railing for Juliette’s descent toward the submerged pumps. Air from her descent collected beneath the hollow stair treads, while the green lights remained lit during her ascent. Later, Juliette and Solo rested on landing one-thirty-two during their difficult climb, with cold air circulating above the water. Juliette continued upward by hauling her exhausted body along the railing. An old bloodstain remains at the railing where Solo now stands above the receding water.
