Crest folk tale of a lost habitat saved by jettisoning exploding methane-chickens as signal flares.
Recounted in the description of the Tiara of a Thousand Lights and Accompanying Charge Pillow, the legend tells of a crest habitat that fled a pirate intrusion, got lost, and then lost life support, communication, propulsion, and lifeboats all at once after colliding with drifting debris in an ancient battlefield. Rescuers could not find it: the junkyard spanned millions of square kilometers and old powered hulks ruined every scan. All 100,000-plus residents resigned themselves to death.
A young engineer devised the fix. Every resident combined their home cooking sphere with a cockrent, a bioengineered space chicken that breathes methane, and jettisoned the sphere-enclosed birds into space, where they exploded into minutes-long bursts of pulsating colored light. The display drew a The Syndicate rescue squad and saved the habitat. The usually-omitted epilogue: the fines were so vast the habitat was repossessed and most adults were forced into indenture. Habitats now commemorate the story once a cycle by jettisoning colorful orbs, and crown a community-voted Thousand Light Princess who wears the ceremonial tiara and sits on the Pillow of Lights during the feast.
