Awakened NPCs

the awakened

Larracos NPCs whose eyes Juice Box opened, aware they are game pieces and that their deaths are permanent.

Story so far

Arief tells Carl that most of the city's NPCs know — about the previous seasons, about their past lives. Some do not seem to understand, and Juice Box says there are different kinds of them made with different purposes: some shopkeepers are different, and some of the patrons of certain establishments are also different, unable to comprehend. "The hands of the outworlders are everywhere," Arief says, "when you know what to look for."

Most, like Arief, believe themselves newly made and remember nothing; the Jatismara remember dozens of prior seasons and sit on Juice Box's war council. When Britney asks whether Arief's uncle remembers dying, Arief says no, and explains their belief that for most of them death is permanent — they are not immortal like the Outworlders. Britney tells him the outworlders are not immortal anymore either, and Arief replies that this is what Juice Box has told them. The awakened have already run a sabotage campaign that bloodied every enemy encampment and breached every inner circle except the Naga's and Architect Houston's Operating Theater, and it costs them dearly: Arief's brother was captured and tortured for it. Carl thinks of Herot, the cookbook author who made waking NPCs his life's work, and wonders whether he survived to see this.
