She used the phrase The Inevitable Ruin for the moment hope ends and only reflection and repentance remain, and she told her daughter plainly that Everly — like all her kind — would accept death and simply ponder when the moment came. Young Everly rejected that prophecy, certain she would rage and fight to the last.
Everly left the colony a few days before the demons arrived, becoming an outcast because she could not abide mantis rules and the suppression of individualism. Dying in the sand beneath The Tower Maze, she notes she is doing exactly what her mother said she would, and she wonders what the queen would have thought of her earning viewership awards and the attention of the whole center system.
