The nurse who invites Katia to pick up baby Annie, then leaves them alone for the last time.
When Katia enters the long ward at the end of the hall, a second nurse is at the counter and smiles as she comes in. She tells Katia she can pick the baby up, just be careful, adding that Annie has not pulled anything out today and they are trying to keep it that way. She addresses the baby directly: "Right, little Annie?"
She then writes something down, turns, and leaves the room, leaving Katia alone with the child. That small act of ordinary kindness creates the space for Katia's Worst Memory, the last time Katia ever holds her.
