Thousands of round holes hidden in the eighth floor's grass, each dropping into a different descending area.
Hidden in the grass of The Eighth Floor are thousands of round holes of varying sizes. Each leads downward into a different area, and those areas continue descending, layer after layer, like the labyrinth of a Cavern Wasp Colony. The stairwells to The Ninth Floor are supposedly at the very bottom.
Because nobody knew whether the holes alone would get them down — or whether The Tower Maze had to be cleared first to unseal the stairwells — crawlers debated the tower and someone had to test it. Everly volunteered, refusing to descend through the holes and refusing company, and it cost her everything. Her Gordon's Compass of Vertical Labyrinth Management explicitly would not function in subterranean mazes, which is precisely the hint that the tower, not the holes, was the intended target.
Round openings of many sizes concealed in tall grass across a flat lowland, each dropping into darkness.
The eighth floor's true descent route, bypassed by the crawlers who gambled on the tower.
