Neighboring Silo Sump Pumps

These bottom-of-silo pumps are part of Juliette’s drainage work; the nearly dry pump now needs intermittent manual operation.

Story so far

Juliette seeks to restore the pumps in the sump basins at the very bottom of the silo. She believes their simple construction and design for submersion should allow them to work, and plans to supply twenty-four-volt power from IT. She installs a landing switch so Solo can test the power while she is below, intending to descend with the wires switched off. Underwater, she connects replacement wires to a pump whose impeller condition remains unknown. Its outflow pipe rises along the wall into overhead mechanical lines, and she worries that a tug could break the improvised ground connection. She leaves the newly wired pump before testing it.

The operating pump eventually draws from a nearly empty shaft with about a foot of water remaining. It overheats and rattles before Jimmy shuts it off. When the basin refills, he must restart it by manually shorting its starter switch.

Appearance

The pumps sit in sump basins at the bottom of the silo. A submerged pump has replacement power wires and an outflow pipe running up the wall into overhead mechanical lines.

Role

The pumps remove floodwater from the silo’s lowest levels. The nearly empty basin now requires the operating pump to be stopped and restarted as water collects.

Relationships

Juliette — Juliette installs replacement wiring to restore pumping, while remaining uncertain about the submerged impeller.
Solo — Solo, also called Jimmy, shuts off the overheating pump and must manually short its starter switch to restart it.
