Juliette’s mother was a delivery nurse who, according to Dr. Nichols, killed herself a week after losing their son.
Juliette’s mother worked alongside Peter Nichols at the old Mid-Level Nursery. During a childhood trip with Juliette, she carried her when her father’s back hurt and bartered at bazaar stalls for their lunch. When a script was offered, she objected to accepting so much paper.
Dr. Nichols says that his wife killed herself a week after their son died. In the unfamiliar nursery she now encounters, Juliette imagines her mother chasing her younger self through the halls and trying to make her be still.
A former delivery nurse and Juliette’s mother, she remains part of Juliette’s memories of family life.
