Story so far
Fitz examined the newly exposed machine and guessed that it was a thousand years old. When the digger appeared unusable, he expressed sympathy for Solo and the children. He later survived the escape through the dig and asked Juliette what she wanted the survivors to do.
As another tunnel was discussed, Fitz questioned whether the destination would be safe and challenged Bobby’s claim that he would welcome outsiders, contrasting Bobby’s children with those still waiting in the lottery. Juliette said Fitz had worked flooded mineshafts; he nevertheless thought her account of surviving the pump-repair dive impossible. During the escape outside, he helped Bobby carry the lead group’s oxygen bottle and followed him in tearing open a glove. He has now used an oxygen bottle to make a cooking fire.
