Story so far
Solo's Father hid Jimmy in rooms beneath the servers, reached through a sliding floor grate, a long ladder, and a narrow passage carrying pipes and wires. The rooms occupied a hidden part of level thirty-five inaccessible from the stairwell. They included a workspace with desks, surveillance equipment, and books in metal containers, as well as a kitchen, bunkroom, showers, and a pantry. His father described enough provisions for four people for ten years. The refuge door used a four-digit keypad that allowed only three failed attempts per day; intruders eventually discovered its code, 1218.
Over the years, Solo made the refuge his home, sleeping on a floor mattress and living among water jugs, canned food, and shelves of metal canisters. Empty food cans accumulated in an adjoining room. The cameras remained broken when he prepared to venture out, and an open hatch later allowed intruders into his sleeping quarters during a major outage. By the time of his later solitude, the grate's locks were broken and rusted. The caged radio provided contact only with silo seventeen's portable radios; Juliette also stayed in the refuge and woke beside Solo's desk.
Fire has now destroyed the books, shattered the computer monitor, and left no visible bedding. When Juliette tried to fight it, the nearby reservoir was empty. Some pantry supplies survive, but she estimates they can feed the gathered survivors for only a few days. The refuge that once sustained one isolated survivor can no longer offer comparable security to the group.
