Cleaning Helmet

Juliette’s cleaning helmet now gives an unobstructed view of the real outside and carries a microphone activated by a finger-and-thumb gesture.

Story so far

The helmet originally supplied oxygen while enclosing its wearer behind an electronic visor. Holston’s display concealed an obstacle before flickering out; the supposed window was a screen. Cleaners saw green hills, blue sky, airborne creatures, and a glittering city, with dead cleaners disguised as rocks. The illusion ended beyond the familiar view from the silo.

Juliette discovered the altered view during her first journey outside and later used a knife to release catches her gloves could not operate. On her return through the Airlock, her clear dome warped and popped in the fire. For the latest expedition, the internal screen has been removed, allowing her to see the actual landscape. She keys the helmet microphone by pinching her thumb and finger together.

Appearance

A helmet attached to a metal ring collar. Juliette’s current version has had its internal display removed to provide a clear view outside.

Role

Protective headgear and a communications interface for Juliette’s expedition; its earlier visor concealed the true landscape.

Relationships

Juliette — Juliette uses the modified helmet to observe the real landscape and communicate during her sampling mission.
