Julie Mao

Runaway shipping heiress turned radical, a missing-person case and a desperate recorded voice.

Story so far

Juliette Andromeda Mao — Julie — is, in Octavia's words, "the richest bachelorette in the system," the black-sheep daughter of the Luna-based Mao-Kwikowski Mercantile shipping dynasty. She went to college, fell in with the radical Far Horizons Foundation, and embarrassed her powerful father enough that he has hired Star Helix through an off-book shareholder favor to track her down on Ceres, detain her, and ship her home — the case Miller is quietly handed and calls a "kidnap job."

She is, as yet, only a name in a file to Miller, but her presence ripples elsewhere: a distorted recording of a young woman's voice — "please help me, is anybody there?" — surfaces aboard the Canterbury, a chilling thread that may tie this lost heiress to the events out at the Scopuli. [uncertain whether the recorded voice is definitively Julie's, though the recording is labelled JULIE].

Role

A wealthy runaway and apparent OPA sympathizer whom Miller is contracted to find and forcibly return to her family; possibly linked to the Scopuli attack.

Relationships

Miller — The detective hired to find and detain her; to him she begins as nothing more than a case file and a rich man's grievance.
Scopuli — A derelict freighter whose distress signal carries a recorded voice attributed to Julie, hinting she is entangled in its fate.
