Fannar is Katia Grim's ex-husband from her life in Reykjavik, who left her for one of his students. His abandonment — along with Katia being denied the chance to adopt — is one of the private griefs Katia once confided, and which Eva weaponizes, mockingly mimicking Katia's voice ("Fannar left me for one of his students... they're not going to let me adopt") to break her down in the train cab. The cruelty backfires, driving Katia into the enraged Rush that kills Hekla.
