La Jeune Amélie

the Genoese tartan

The Genoese smuggling tartan, captained by old Baldi, that takes Dantès on as crew after his escape.

Story so far

La Jeune Amélie is a Genoese lateen-rigged tartan working the contraband trade across the Mediterranean under her shrewd old patron, Captain Baldi. Running muslins, cottons, powder, tobacco, cigars, and wine past the customs officers between Leghorn, Corsica, Sardinia, and the French coast, she takes on the rescued Edmond Dantès, whose seamanship soon makes him her natural leader. Crucially, her crew use the deserted Monte Cristo Island as a smuggling rendezvous, giving Dantès the innocent pretext he needs to land there.

Appearance

A small, swift Genoese tartan with a lateen sail, capable of skimming the sea like a gull; armed with two small culverins when nearing shore.

Role

The smuggling vessel that carries Dantès to freedom and to Monte Cristo.

Relationships

Edmond Dantès — The rescued sailor who becomes her ablest hand and de facto commander.
Jacopo — The Corsican crewman whose loyalty to Dantès deepens aboard her.
