Off-world pirates who hunt surface survivors and sell them to the production — the trade that took Beatrice.
The censored video package that opens Odette's show covers, among other things, the illegal practice of bounty hunters seeking out and finding survivors on the planet's surface so they can sell them to the production — a market feeding on the humans who never went down into the dungeon. Zev has to narrate this to Carl and Princess Donut because the censor blocks the footage from them.
The official story makes them the villains of Beatrice's rescue: she survived the initial collapse only to be kidnapped by bounty hunters intent on selling her to Borant, taken off world to a black market somewhere in the inner system, whereupon Borant disavowed the practice and turned the pirates over to the Syndicate. A battle ensued and one pirate died. Bea's own account is fragmentary and doesn't match — men coming into her tent while she slept and immediately fighting among themselves when they saw her, her memory wiped, a small alien at the black market who seemed to recognise her and started shouting, then a cube and a ship crewed by men with hyena faces. Carl knows the sanctioned version is horseshit; what the hunters actually did, and who eventually took her, stays behind the holes in her memory.
Not directly seen. Described secondhand as men who entered Beatrice's tent while she slept and fell to fighting among themselves, and separately as a crew of hyena-faced men on the ship that carried her away.
Freelance kidnappers trafficking surface survivors to the production; the nominal villains of the official account of Beatrice's disappearance.
