Recalled by Carl when he got his first proper look at a live bugbear in Goiter. Shamus Chaindrive, the submarine captain from the last floor, had also been a bugbear — but he'd been nothing but a head in a jar, so Carl never really got to see what the race looked like. Meeting Goiter atop a rooftop with his hammer and leather apron was the first time Carl properly registered how large, furry and goblin-faced bugbears actually are.
