Hyena-headed people the dungeon reproduced as NPCs on the fourth floor, and who exist for real outside it.
Carl identifies the two guards who drop into the Security Checkpoint as shade gnolls — the kind that look like hyenas, the same type of creature as Growler Gary, the NPC he was forced to kill a dozen times over on the fourth floor. The distinction he draws is the point: these are real ones, members of the Shade Gnoll Riot Forces, mercenaries rather than dungeon-spawned fodder, and no tool tips appear over them.
In person they are capable and disciplined, moving through low gravity with practiced ease, dropping feet-first through a ceiling hatch and launching themselves back up through it higher than Carl expects. One grunts with amusement at a joke about explosives; the other stops to scratch a cat under the chin on his way out.
Hyena-headed humanoids with the heads left bare above full-body plastic-like armor, heavy booted feet that click on glass, and enough strength to jump cleanly through an overhead hatch.
A species Carl previously knew only as dungeon-manufactured NPCs, now encountered as free professionals working the outside world.
