Miriam reveals that fifth-floor vampirism forms a progenitor hierarchy: killing the prime within a month cures all descendants, while surviving a floor makes a crawler's infection permanent.
New vampires receive different combinations of powers, including contagion, charisma, shape-shifting, direct attacks, control over other infected beings, and the creation of undead minions. They begin relatively weak but grow quickly. Infected creatures generally do not attack their uninfected natural kin.
Miriam Dom is the progenitor of the outbreak spreading through the forest. Big Tina is an unusually powerful boss descendant whose abilities let her build an undead army. More than a dozen crawlers have also been infected. Because none of Miriam's descendants have carried the curse for a full month, her death will cure them all.
Any crawler who completes a floor while infected gains a hellish title and becomes permanently vampiric. Miriam's title is Princess of Hell. The canceled Blood Hunter storyline was designed to culminate in Viscount Fog killing Miriam and stopping the forest apocalypse.
Vampirism is the floor-wide contagion whose hierarchical rules make Miriam's death a mass cure.
