Razor

polyenne sword · the razor

The Gold gentleman's polyenne blade — soft as hair one instant, harder than diamond the next, and death for any other Color to carry.

Story so far

The razor, or polyenne sword, is the signature weapon of the Golds, first shown to Darrow by Matteo disguised as a shampoo bottle. A single organic blade that hangs soft as hair one moment and, on an impulse, turns harder than diamond the next, it can be a whip or a perfect sword and is the only thing that will cut through a pulseShield. It is the weapon of a gentleman: an Aureate draws it at the slightest provocation, for their honor is personal, familial, and planetary, and they do not forgive once blood is let, least of all the Peerless Scarred.

For any other Color to carry one is death.

Appearance

A slim rod that shifts on command from a soft, whip-like flexible strand to a rigid blade harder than diamond; unremarkable at rest, lethal in an instant.

Role

The Golds' honor-weapon Darrow must learn to master to pass among them.

Relationships

Golds — The ruling Color who alone may carry it, drawing it to settle honor with blood.
Matteo — The tutor who first reveals it to Darrow and its deadly etiquette.
Darrow — The false Gold who must learn to wield it as his own.
