Oil-black tunnel serpents that seek warmth in a Helldiver's suit, their venomous young the deadliest.
Pitvipers are the serpents that curl through the darkness of the deep tunnels of Mars, drawn to the warmth of a drill or a body. Descended, like the Reds, from Earth stock and changed by Mars and the deep tunnels, they bite through a frysuit and burrow toward the warmest place, often the belly, to lay their eggs. Grown ones can be as wide as a thigh and long as three men, but it is the babies that are feared, for they cannot ration their poison.
Darrow has been bitten before and still dreams of them.
