Laconia Gate

Laconian gate · Laconia ring

The ring gate to Laconia admitted Duarte's breakaway fleet and links his isolated civilization to humanity's thousand-world network.

Story so far

The Laconia Gate is one of the portals built by the Protomolecule to connect ordinary space with the Slow Zone. Almost three decades ago, Winston Duarte and his breakaway Martian fleet passed through it and began building Laconia into an independent civilization. The gate remains the system's only known route back to the wider human network.

Appearance

A colossal alien ring suspended in space, opening into the pocket-universe nexus that links Laconia with more than a thousand other inhabited and unexplored systems.

Role

The gate is Laconia's strategic connection to the rest of humanity and the threshold that once enabled Duarte's secession.

Relationships

Laconia — Laconia lies beyond the gate and depends on it for access to the wider network.
Protomolecule — The Protomolecule was designed to construct gates like this by hijacking local organic life.
Slow ZoneBk 3 — The Slow Zone is the pocket-universe hub reached by crossing the gate.
