Juliette’s sealed samples show unequal damage to suit materials; a missing control seal informs her conclusion that the gas is poison.
The air-sampling containers hold paired gaskets and strips of heat tape, and Juliette seals their lids with waxy sealant. Container 2 holds the second outside-air sample. The collection includes two outside-air samples, an airlock argon control, surface and deep soil, and dried human remains.
The hill-air sample leaves the Supply gasket intact while visibly consuming the other gasket. In the ramp-air sample, roughly half of the vulnerable gasket is worn away. The control collected in the airlock contains only one remaining seal. When the emergency begins, Juliette remembers that missing seal as she concludes the gas is poison.
Containers sealed with waxy material; air-sampling containers contain paired gaskets and strips of heat tape. One is marked 2, and the airlock control has only one seal remaining.
Physical evidence for comparing air samples and deterioration of different suit materials.
