Neighboring Silo

Silo 17 · Silo Seventeen

Silo Seventeen shelters refugees from the neighboring disaster, but its ravaged farms, dwindling food, and threatened power have made departure urgent.

Story so far

Juliette reached the neighboring hollow after her cleaning and found bodies piled outside a dark, apparently abandoned silo. Its foul air was breathable, its familiar layout resembled her own silo, and emergency lighting still worked. Solo identified it as Silo Seventeen and believed it drew power from other silos rather than generating its own. Surviving cables powered farm lights and irrigation. Juliette’s pumping work eventually lowered the floodwater, and children again ran through the corridors.

Reports from Eren describe a collapse more than thirty years earlier: an airlock opening out of sequence, a lower-level gas purge, an upward-moving riot, and a shutdown ordered by Silo One. He said a routine call received an answer even as collapse codes were sent. Other accounts show survivors farming, fighting over resources, and living amid worsening corrosion and rising water. Donald later believed the opened airlock had admitted lethal outside gas despite Anna’s intervention; this remains his interpretation.

The nearly drained Deep offered hope of restoration, but visiting workers removed parts and steel, and Jimmy objected that the promised rebuilding was becoming salvage. Refugees then dispersed through the rusted silo with only what they had carried from their own disaster. Digger power restored lights in the pump room, generator room, and main hall, yet newcomers disputed farm plots and stripped them of food. Looting took wire, pipe, and plants. Juliette warns that fire threatens the power cables and that the ravaged farms cannot sustain weeks of further digging. Food continues to dwindle as the residents prepare to leave.

Appearance

A rusting silo with a layout familiar to Juliette, debris-filled passages, deteriorating metal, hoses, and adhesives, and lower levels prone to flooding. Its farms and electrical systems survive unevenly amid extensive decay.

Role

A surviving refuge that briefly promised restoration but now faces a worsening shortage of food and threats to its essential systems.
